“The grad programme in Capital One offers a great opportunity to try out different roles within the company, including front end, back end, quality engineering, and even design and data science if there is capacity in those teams.
The two main parts of my job are planning and actual coding. A lot of planning and design is required for software development before the actual coding work is done to make sure we spend our time on prioritised tasks. This makes sure we focus on coding up what's important, instead of spending too much resource on code that already works. There are also maintenance tasks to make sure our codebase is compliant and resistant to cyber-attacks.
Before I joined, I did General Engineering as an undergraduate and Machine Learning as a postgraduate. I was interested in civil engineering at first as I enjoyed building things from scratch. Then I did a software engineering module, which gave me a good foundation on coding concepts which helped when I used object-oriented programming languages like Java. Meanwhile, all of the python I used in Machine Learning was incredibly useful for my current role!
I’ve had a real sense of accomplishment seeing my work used by actual customers. And the whole team celebrates together after working so hard for months on a single project. The work culture is amazing at Capital One and you will have the chance to meet people from all sorts of backgrounds."
