Software Engineering Manager - Data

Software Engineering Manager - Data

About this role

It’s an exciting time at Capital One UK. We’re on a mission to create our next generation, cloud-based data ecosystem, to unlock the power of data, increase financial inclusion and deliver transformative experiences to our customers.

The Data Modernisation team owns the data ecosystem. It  captures and distributes data in real time, makes sure data is accurate & easy to use, enabling analysis for deep insight backed by the power of a Cloud based data Lake House,  scalable machine learning, and powerful data processing, to provide the right data to enable effective Business decisions.

We are seeking a Data Engineering Manager to join us on our mission, where you’ll lead a team of Data Engineers in building data solutions to solve complex problems, unlocking data to help our customers. You will enable the evolution of our Cloud based data ecosystem, shape how we build and create effective data-driven solutions, whilst growing and nurturing a team of talented Data Engineers.

What you’ll do

  • Shape the delivery of a modern Cloud based data processing and data transformation (ETL) platform in AWS, designed to support a wide range of internal Data customers, in partnership with the architecture community
  • Challenge the Technical solutions and approaches we use to provide Data solutions to our customers, as we focus on modernization; moving from ETL to ELT and investing in new ways of leveraging our Lake House to drive value
  • Collaborate and build trusted relationships with a broad, cross-functional range of internal Data customers (both Business and Technical across the UK and US), shaping & prioritising their requirements and delivering high quality data solutions and data ETL through your team to meet their needs
  • Support and grow the productivity of your Data Engineering team, enabling them to rapidly deliver high quality, scalable, resilient and trusted data solutions, aligned with software development best practice (e.g. using Code deployment pipelines & CI/CD)
  • Coach, nurture and develop the associates in your team, supporting their personal and technical growth
  • Enhance and shape the Engineering and Agile delivery processes within your team to support quality and pace
  • Innovate and find new ways to enable Data customers to self-serve their data needs
  • Work with technology partners and provide proactive feedback to ensure a stable resource pool for the growing team and the direction of our data ecosystem

What we’re looking for

  • You’ll have experience in performing as a Technical lead, designing Data solutions (ETL, Data Models, & Data Products), collaborating with stakeholders to deliver data outcomes, whilst influencing across wider Engineering teams, to encourage Data Engineering best practice and coaching of more Junior engineers
  • You’ll have experience in leading a Data engineering team to achieve business outcomes at pace  and have experience in actively managing the growth of individuals within the team
  • You’ll have excellent all round knowledge of an ETL platform and be able to leverage this knowledge to steer the direction of our ETL platform and how we build modern Data-driven solutions in AWS Cloud and through our Lake House
  • You’re comfortable in reaching technical trade-offs between short-term team and long-term business needs
  • You have strong understanding and a passion for Data Engineering and Software development best practice
  • You’re excited about recruiting and developing great engineering talent
  • You communicate actively with peers, your reports, and can handle escalations to stakeholders

Experience in any of the following would be great, however we will help you develop in these areas too

  • Working within a finance or regulated environment
  • Working with the cloud/AWS and the opportunities that it brings
  • Knowledge of financial data and data models
  • Experience with our technology stack (Ab Initio (multiple applications), Control-m, Snowflake and AWS Cloud services)
  • Use of Agile delivery (Kanban/Scrum)

Where and how you'll work

This is a permanent position and is based in our Nottingham office. We’ve adopted a flexible hybrid working model - one that creates the opportunity to work in your own way, but also provides great spaces for in-person collaboration.

We’re big on collaboration and connection, so you’ll be based in our Nottingham office 3 days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

We are committed to creating a level playing field and seek to create teams that are representative of our customers and the communities we serve.  We’d love to hear from you if you identify with a typically under-represented group in our industry and are particularly keen to hear from women and ethnic minority candidates.

What’s in it for you

  • Bring us all this - and you’ll be well rewarded with a role contributing to the roadmap of an organisation committed to transformation
  • We offer high performers strong and diverse career progression, investing heavily in developing great people through our Capital One University training programmes (and appropriate external providers)
  • Immediate access to our core benefits including pension scheme, bonus, generous holiday entitlement and private medical insurance – with flexible benefits available including season-ticket loans, cycle to work scheme and enhanced parental leave
  • Open-plan workspaces and accessible facilities designed to inspire and support you. Our Nottingham head-office has a fully-serviced gym, subsidised restaurant, mindfulness and music rooms.

What you should know about how we recruit

We pride ourselves on hiring the best people, not the same people. Building diverse and inclusive teams is the right thing to do and the smart thing to do. We want to work with top talent: whoever you are, whatever you look like, wherever you come from. We know it’s about what you do, not just what you say. That’s why we make our recruitment process fair and accessible. And we offer benefits that attract people at all ages and stages.

We also partner with organisations including the Women in Finance and Race At Work Charters, Stonewall and upReach to find people from every walk of life and help them thrive with us. We have a whole host of internal networks and support groups you could be involved in, to name a few:

  • REACH – Race Equality and Culture Heritage group focuses on representation, retention and engagement for associates from minority ethnic groups and allies
  • OutFront – to provide LGBTQ+ support for all associates
  • Mind Your Mind – signposting support and promoting positive mental wellbeing for all
  • Women in Tech – promoting an inclusive environment in tech
  • EmpowHER - network of female associates and allies focusing on developing future leaders, particularly for female talent in our industry
