The Champions of Change Podcast

Welcome to the Champions of Change podcast from Capital One. Bringing together engineers, managers and directors, industry leaders and change-makers for a deep dive into the representation and experiences of women in tech. The series is hosted by Sonya Barlow, who is an award-winning diversity business coach and motivational speaker. Over six episodes, Sonya and the team explore the barriers, challenges and misconceptions that can often hold women back from pursuing a career in tech and discuss what organisations can and should be doing to build a more diverse future generation of tech leaders.

1.Let's recognise the crucial role mentors play in shaping careers

Sonya welcomes Rachel Hover, Director of Technology; Abeer Kiani, Stacey Nutbrown and Brooke Lear, Software Engineers. They consider the lessons they learned from influential role models on their way up the professional ladder.

2.Let’s make it easier to balance a tech career with being a parent

Sonya chats with Stacey Nutbrown, Software Engineer, and Shama Hamid and Hong Li, Software Engineering Managers. They share their experiences as working mothers in tech and how the industry can better support career returners.

3.Let’s break down barriers for the next generation of women in tech

This episode’s guests include Rachel Hover, Director of Technology, and Lauren Corderoy and Sophie Hogarth, Software Engineers. They talk to Sonya about some of the obstacles they’ve encountered as women in tech and the efforts being made by organisations like Capital One to remove them.

4.Let’s improve the representation of women in tech

In episode four, Sonya connects with Raana Christopher, a recruiter at Capital One, Kaj Bansal, Technical Programme Manager and Renka Pooja, Software Engineer. They reflect on how representation has improved over the years for women and people of colour in this sector.

5.Let's shift perceptions of what it takes to be a tech leader

Our host, Sonya Barlow, is joined by Rachel Barton, Director of Technology; Madhu Prashanth, Software Engineering Manager; and Samantha Birkinshaw, Senior Technical Programme Manager. They discuss their individual journeys to Capital One and what it takes to be a true leader.

6.Let’s connect with our male colleagues on steps for change

In the final episode, Sonya speaks to Lee Winder and Simon Smith, who are both Software Engineering Managers at Capital One. They offer their perspective on the industry’s gender gap and how we can move forward as a team.
