“I studied computer science at Uni - I’d always really enjoyed maths, solving problems and learning foreign languages - computer science felt like a great way to merge all three!
When I first joined Capital One, I was able to bring lots of technical skills from my degree - knowledge of programming languages, Agile practices, and problem solving. But it was Steve, a senior developer, who helped me get to the next level. One of the most humble, friendly and helpful people I’ve ever worked with, he took time to go through things with me, encouraged me to stretch myself and gave me great feedback on how I could improve.
The people are one of the two main reasons I love working here. They are what sold me on Capital One in the first place - everyone is so friendly and day to day I have such fun working with my team. We’re encouraged to spend time with each other, get to know one another, do more than just work together!
The second reason feels a bit odd to say about a credit card company, but unfortunately, we live in a world where credit cards are needed, and I like that Capital One tries to be a good company in this space and actually cares about customers.
There’s no such thing as a typical day for me, which is one of the things I really love about my role. I could be writing automated tests for our services, debugging why some tests have failed for a service, working with other quality engineers to come up with new and improved ways of testing, or working with the developers in my team to help them ensure their code meets our quality standards.
I also occasionally get to do something totally different too. I helped organise a Christmas fun day with cook-alongs, murder mysteries and magic shows for 60 people, and everyone loved it!"
